CRF Linnaeus Fund
Annual Turtle Research Awards
Chelonian Research Foundation, established as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) foundation in 1992, administered a turtle research endowment named the Linnaeus Fund from 1992 to 2011 for which it invited the submission of research proposals for Annual Turtle Research Awards. Named after Carolus Linnaeus [1707–1778], the Swedish creator of binomial nomenclature, the fund honored the first turtle taxonomist and father of all modern systematics. Linnaeus Fund awards were granted annually to individuals for specific turtle research projects, with either partial or full support as funding allowed.
Linnaeus Fund awards were distributed annually from 1992 through 2011, supporting 118 separate projects in the approximate range of $1000 to $2000 per project, for a total of $141,200 distributed.
As of 2013, the Linnaeus Fund closed to further grant applications, but instead, in 2021 CRF inaugurated a new Turtle Taxonomy Fund in partnership with Turtle Conservancy to take its place in funding work on turtle taxonomy and systematics.
In addition, CRF has been a coalition partner with the Turtle Conservation Fund for many years and provides financial stewardship for TCF with Global Wildlife Conservation.
